Etymology: < scientific Latin Lactarius, genus name (1800 or earlier), alteration (with change of gender) of Lactaria (1797: see note at definition), use as noun of feminine of classical Latin lactārius lactary adj.
A large, widely distributed genus of ectomycorrhizal fungi of the family Russulaceae, the members of which typically have a fruiting body with a brittle texture and a flattened cap exuding white or coloured latex when bruised or cut; (also lactarius) a fungus of this genus (frequently with distinguishing word).Common names for these fungi include milk cap, milk mushroom, and milky cap. Some species are edible.Valid publication of the genus name (as Lactaria): C. H. Persoon Tentamen Dispositionis Methodicæ Fungorum (1797) 63.
