Any cyclic compound that is formed by the oxygen atom in a C(OH) group (esp. one in a sugar) becoming linked to the carbon atom of a carbonyl group in the same molecule (with the transfer of the hydrogen atom of the former group to the oxygen atom of the latter). Abstr. 19 2931 The name lactol (aldolactol, ketolactol) is proposed for the cyclo-form of hydroxyaldehydes and ketones, the length of the O-bridge being indicated by Greek letters (as for the lactones) or by nos. in brackets (as for the sugars). 1967 I.
