Etymology: < lady n. + day n. Probably originally reflecting a genitive compound with unmarked first element (see discussion at lady n.). A day on which a religious festival in honour of the Virgin Mary is celebrated. Now only March 25th, the Feast of the Annunciation. Formerly also December 8th, the Conception of the Virgin; September 8th, the Nativity; and August 15th, the Assumption.Lady Day (25th March) is the first of the traditional quarter days (see quarter day n.) and until the adoption of the Gregorian calendar (1752 in Britain) marked the first day of the new year.
