Etymology: < French au mieux (apparently end of the 18th cent. or earlier) < au to the + mieux better (c1100 as mielz in Old French as adjective and noun, 9th cent. as mialz , adverb; < classical Latin melius , use as noun of neuter of melior better: see meliorate v.).Not fully naturalized in English. O.E.D. Suppl. (1972) gives only the non-naturalized pronunciation (o myö) /o mjø/.
