单词 auburn
释义

auburnadj.

/ˈɔːbəːn/
Forms: Middle English–1600s aborne, abourne, 1500s alborne, auberne, aberne, 1500s–1600s auborn(e, abourn, aburn(e, 1800s auburne, 1700s– auburn; also 1500s abron, abrun(e, 1600s abroun, abrown.
Etymology: < Old French alborne, auborne < Latin alburnus (= subalbus , Du Cange) nearly white, whitish. In 16–17th cent. written abron , abrune , abroun (compare apron n., aperne), which probably originated, or at least encouraged, the idea that auburn was a kind of brown (an etymology actually adopted by Richardson), and so helped to modify the signification of the word.
a. originally. Of a yellowish- or brownish-white colour; now, of a golden-brown or ruddy-brown colour.
