Etymology: < the genitive of lady n. + mantle n., although the first element is sometimes apprehended as plural; so called on account of the supposed resemblance of the leaves to a cloak. Compare Dutch vrouwenmantel (early 19th cent. or earlier), German Frauenmantel , Marienmantel , Swedish (now chiefly regional) jungfru Marie kåpa (1652), (northern) jungfru Marie kjol (19th cent. or earlier). Any of various perennial herbaceous plants comprising the chiefly Eurasian genus Alchemilla (family Rosaceae), typically having palmately lobed leaves and inconspicuous greenish flowers; esp. the European A. vulgaris, which was formerly valued in medicine. Frequently with distinguishing word.
