Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: lady n., slipper n.
Etymology: < the genitive of lady n. + slipper n., although the first element is sometimes apprehended as plural; so called on account of the shape of the flowers. In β. forms either < lady n. + slipper n. (perhaps originally reflecting a genitive compound with unmarked first element: see discussion at lady n.) or simply by assimilation (and subsequent reanalysis) in the α. forms With sense 1 compare Our Lady's slipper n., Our Lady's shoe n. at Our Lady n. Compounds 2b, and also German Frauenschuh, Marienschuh (both 18th cent. or earlier).
1. Originally: the Eurasian orchid Cypripedium calceolus, the large flower of which has a yellow lip that is deeply pouched and slipper-shaped, with contrasting maroon petals. Later also (usually with distinguishing word): any of various other north temperate orchids of the genus Cypripedium or subfamily Cypripedioideae, having flowers with a characteristic slipper-shaped lip; also called (North American) moccasin flower.ram's head lady's slipper: see ram's head n. 1b.
