单词 larch
释义

larchn.

Brit. /lɑːtʃ/, U.S. /lɑrtʃ/
Forms: Also 1500s larche, larshe. β. 1700s larich, larinch.
Etymology: Introduced by Turner (see quot. 1548 for larch-tree n. at Compounds 1), < German lärche < Middle High German lerche , larche < Old High German *lerihha , *larihha , an early adoption (prior to the assibilation of c in Latin) of Latin laricem , larix (whence late Greek λάριξ ): corresponding phonetically to Old Celtic *darik- (Irish dair , genitive darach , Welsh dar ) oak. Other English writers in the 16th cent. adopted the word in the Latin form (see larix n.), sometimes corrupted into larinx; hence apparently some of the dialectal forms given above. Compare further Dutch lariks, and the unexplained forms German lorche, Dutch lorke(boom); also Italian larice, Spanish lárice, Portuguese larico, French (Cotgrave) larege, lareze, medieval Latin laresus.
