单词 lama
释义

laman.1

Brit. /ˈlɑːmə/, U.S. /ˈlɑmə/
Forms: 1600s– lama, 1700s lamma, 1800s llama, 1700s– lhama.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin lama.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin lama (1654 uninflected in the passage translated in quot. 1654; 1667 with inflections in the work translated in quot. 1669 for Grand (also Great) Lama n. at sense 1b) < classical Mongolian lama (14th cent. in Middle Mongolian) or its etymon Tibetan bla.ma (with silent b) spiritual leader, literally ‘superior one’. Compare French lama (1629), Dutch lama (1670 or earlier). In Grand Lama n. and Great Lama n. after post-classical Latin Magnus Lama (1667 in the passage translated in quot. 1669 for Grand (also Great) Lama n. at sense 1b), itself apparently after Tibetan tā.la'i.bla.ma or a corresponding Mongolian word (see Dalai Lama n. and the discussion at that entry); compare French grand lama (1670 in a translation of the same Latin source). Variant forms. In the form lhama probably by association with the initial letters of the name of the city of Lhasa (Tibetan lha.sa : see Lhasa n.). In the form llama perhaps (purely graphically) by association with llama n.
Buddhism.
