Etymology: Alteration of Lamaism n., with insertion of -n-, probably after shamanism n. and perhaps also Brahmanism, variant of Brahmanism n. Compare French †lamanisme (1816 or earlier), German Lamanismus (1808 or earlier, rare).
Buddhism. Now rare.
A collective term for: those forms of Mahayana Buddhism in which lamas play a significant role, such as those practised in Tibet and Mongolia; = Lamaism n.
