Etymology: < the surname Lane (see note) + cake n.Although the origin of the cake itself is frequently traced to an 1898 recipe for ‘Prize Cake’ by Emma Rylander Lane of Clayton, Alabama, the earliest recorded use of the name Lane cake occurs in a recipe provided by a Mrs. W. C. Lane, also of Alabama (see quot. 1921).
A white layer cake of a type traditional in the southern United States, with a rich filling typically containing nuts, dried fruit, and bourbon or brandy.
