Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Urdu. Partly a borrowing from Panjabi. Partly a borrowing from Persian. Etymons: Urdu langar; Panjabi laṅgar; Persian langar.

Etymology: (i) Urdu langar and (ii) Panjabi laṅgar public kitchen, almshouse; food distributed to the needy, also denoting a public eating place attached to a gurdwara, and their etymon (iii) Persian langar public eating place attached to an (esp. Sufi) shrine, of uncertain origin.

In South Asia: a communal kitchen or eating place (in quot. 1874: a rest house for travellers). Now esp. (Sikhism): a public eating place attached to a gurdwara and run by the local Sikh community, serving free food (typically after worship); (also) the food or a meal served in such a place.
