Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish autopista.
Etymology: < Spanish autopista (although this is apparently first attested slightly later: 1929) < auto- auto- comb. form2 + pista track (see piste n.2).
In Spain and Spanish-speaking countries: a fast road for cars; a motorway.
