Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; partly modelled on a Spanish lexical item. Etymons: auto- comb. form1, -poiesis comb. form.
Etymology: < auto- comb. form1 + -poiesis comb. form. In later use after Spanish autopoiesis ( H. R. Maturana & F. G. Varela De máquinas y seres vivos (1972) v. 67).
The self-maintenance of an organized entity through its own internal processes; (in extended use) self-organization, self-regulation. Also: self-creation (rare).Formulated as a defining characteristic of living systems.
