Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French autoroute.
Etymology: < French autoroute (1927) < auto auto n.5 + route road (see route n.1), after Italian autostrada autostrada n. Compare earlier autobahn n.
In France or other French-speaking regions: a fast road for cars; a motorway.
