Linguistics.
A. adj.
Of a word or phrase: having meaning outside a context; meaningful in isolation. Opposed to synsemantic adj.First proposed by the philosopher Anton Marty (1847–1914) as a correlate in linguistics of the distinction in logic between categorematic and syncategorematic. The term is generally taken to include ‘full’ words like nouns, verbs, adjectives, etc., as opposed to ‘function’ words such as pronouns, prepositions, and particles.
