Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek αὐτόθεος , -ism suffix.
Etymology: < Byzantine Greek αὐτόθεος very God ( < ancient Greek αὐτο- auto- comb. form1 + θεός God: see theo- comb. form) + -ism suffix. With the 19th-cent. and later use in sense 2 compare German Autotheismus (1801 or earlier) and French autothéisme (1837 or earlier), in same sense.
1. Theology. The doctrine of the self-subsistence of God, independently of any other being; spec. the attribution of inherent divinity to Christ, as opposed to a divinity bestowed upon him by God the Father. Obsolete.
