单词 latten
释义

lattenn.

Brit. /ˈlatn/, U.S. /ˈlætn/
Forms: Middle English (also 1800s archaic) latoun, latun, Middle English–1500s latyn, Middle English–1600s, 1800s laten, (Middle English latoen, latone), Middle English–1700s latin, 1500s lattinne, lattoun, lattyne, lattyng, latynn, 1500s–1600s latine, lattyn(n, 1500s–1800s lattin, (1600s laden, letanie, lettanie), Middle English– laton, Middle English– latton, latten.
Etymology: < Old French laton, leiton, modern French laiton = Provençal lato , Spanish laton , Portuguese latão , Piedmontese loton , Italian ottone (the initial l having been dropped through being mistaken for the definite article). The relation between these forms is obscure; if the French form be original, it would point to a popular Latin type *lactōn-em ; if the word was originally Spanish, it may be a derivative of Common Romance *latta lath, tin-plate (Italian latta , Spanish lata , Portuguese lata , French latte ; of Germanic origin: see lath n.). From French the word was adopted into the Germanic and Slavic languages: compare Dutch latoen, Old Norse látun, Russian latun′.
