Etymology: Etymology uncertain. Compare Old English wæltan to roll, past tense in Lindisfarne Matt. xxvii. 60 awælte, in Rushworth awælede; but the place of the stress makes the relationship doubtful.

1799–1863 Trans. Highl. Soc. 3 447 (Jam.) Sheep are most apt to die awald, when it grows warm after a shower.
