单词 lef-silver
释义

lef-silvern.

Brit. /ˈlɛfˌsɪlvə/, U.S. /ˈlɛfˌsɪlvər/
Forms: 1600s–1700s lef-silver, 1700s lyef-silver.
Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps a variant of alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: lessilver n.
Etymology: Origin uncertain; perhaps originally a misreading of or typographical error for lessilver n. (when written with a long s (ſ ) at the end of the first element), perhaps influenced by forms of leave n.1, either while the word was still current or as a result of subsequent association with that word by early modern antiquarians (compare quot. a1669).The wider context of the passage cited in quot. 1660 also gives further examples of similar terms beginning with les- as well as lef- , leaf- , and lyef- , but the manuscript records referred to are now difficult to trace. For a similar development compare ladysilver n.
historical.
A payment made for the right to plough or sow land used for pannage.
