1. A cap or bonnet made of lettice fur. Now historical.In some quots. the first element may be an instance of lattice n. with reference to a net cap; cf. lettice bonnet n.

2. In the works of John Fletcher: a kind of cap supposed to have sleep-inducing properties. Obsolete.It is unclear whether the first element is to be apprehended as an instance of lettice n. or lettuce n. Lettuce was supposed to have a sedative effect (cf. quot. 1614 at lettuce n. 1a), and the ‘cap’ referred to here may be a lettuce leaf placed on the head of a sleepless patient. Robert Nares ( Gloss. (1822) (at cited word)) suggests that a net cap is meant (see note at sense 1), but this interpretation has been rejected by most commentators.
