Compare also chromism n.Formations are attested from at least the second half of the 19th cent.; apparently earliest in formations paralleled by equivalent nouns ending in -chromatism ( < chromatism n. or its Greek etymon); compare e.g. metachromism n. and polychromism n. From at least the early 20th cent. also attested in formations after words in e.g. French -chromie or German -chromie -chromy comb. form (compare e.g. halochromism n. at halo- comb. form1 , thermochromism n.).
