Etymology: < law n.1 + man n.1; the Old English lahmann was probably < Old Norse laga-, lǫgmann- (nominative -maðr), whence Anglo-Latin lagamannus, lagemannus, by some writers on legal antiquities anglicized as lageman.
Now chiefly Historical.
1. Old English Law.
a. One whose official duty it was to declare the law. (Kingsley's use is incorrect.)
