Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin legem pone.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin legem pone, lit. ‘put the law’ (Vulgate: Roman Psalter, Gallican Psalter), the first two words (forming the heading) of the fifth division (verses 33-40) of Psalm 119 (118 in the Vulgate) < classical Latin lēgem , accusative of lēx law (see legal adj.) + pōne , 2nd singular imperative of pōnere to put, place (see ponent adj.1).Compare the following earlier examples of legem pone in an English context as the heading of the fifth division of Psalm 119:OE Rule St. Benet (Corpus Cambr.) xviii. 42 Æfter þam feower capitulas, þæt is feower todala angin þæs hundteontigeðan and eahtateoðan sealmas, þæt is ‘Beati inmaculati’ oð ‘legem pone’.a1464 J.
