Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Legionella.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Legionella, genus name (see quot. 19791) < legion n. (with reference to legionnaires' disease n.) + classical Latin -ella -ella suffix.
Microbiology.
Any bacterium of the genus Legionella, the members of which are motile Gram-negative rods which typically live in water, and are capable of causing an influenza-like illness and pneumonia in humans (cf. legionnaires' disease n.); (in form Legionella) the genus itself. Frequently attributive.Valid publication of the genus name: D. Brenner et al. 1979, in Internat. Jrnl. Systematic Bacteriol. 29 436.
