Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin legislation-, legislatio.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin legislation-, legislatio action of making or giving laws (Vetus Latina), book of laws (c1238 in a British source) < classical Latin lēgis , genitive of lēx law (see legal adj.) + lātiōn- , lātiō bringing (see lation n.). Compare Middle French legislation , French législation body of laws collectively (late 14th cent. in an apparently isolated attestation, subsequently from 1789), authority to make laws (1721). Compare earlier legislator n.
