Origin: Apparently a borrowing from Dutch. Etymon: Dutch leguan.
Etymology: Apparently < Dutch †leguan (1657 in a Latin context as legvan , in the passage translated in quot. 1678, or earlier; now leguaan), apparently < French †l'iguana < le the + †iguana iguana n.; compare French †liguana , †leguane (both 1688), †legouane (1790 in the passage translated in quot. 1790 at sense 2, or earlier). Compare German Leguan (1726 or earlier). Compare later likkewaan n.Compare the following earlier example of the Dutch word in an English context:1678 J. P. tr. J. Johnstone Descr.
