In both these exercises which are constructed from the Piaffe, the hind quarters, deeply bent in the haunch, support the entire weight of the body, whilst the fore quarters with the fore feet drawn up under the body, rise more or less high above the ground; the duration of this position depends upon the dexterity and strength of the stallion. If the horse raises the fore quarters so high that his body reaches an angle of 45° with the earth, this is called ‘Pesade’; on the other hand, if it raises the fore quarters less high, one speaks of a Levade.
