Origin: A borrowing from Yiddish. Etymon: Yiddish lekakh.

Etymology: < Yiddish lekakh, lekekh, apparently < Middle High German lebekuoche lebkuchen n.With the form of the Yiddish word, compare German (now regional) Leckkuchen , variant of Lebkuchen lebkuchen n., although this variant (in later use folk-etymologically associated with lecken lick v.) is only attested from the 16th cent. There is no evidence to support the suggestion that the Yiddish word is ultimately < Aramaic lĕḵaḵ; apart from posing formal problems, the Aramaic verb (of uncertain sense, perhaps ‘to mix thoroughly’) is only attested in one isolated instance in the Talmud.
