Etymology: < the name of Christopher John Leyland (1849–1926), of Haggerston Castle.

Leyland's cypress n. (also Leyland cypress) a hybrid conifer × Cupressocyparis leylandii ( Chamæcyparis nootkatensis × Cupressus macrocarpa), first raised by Leyland from seedlings collected at Leighton Hall, Welshpool, in 1888.
