Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Russian. Etymons: French Lesgien, Lesguine; Russian lezgin.
Etymology: In α. forms (i) < French Lesgien, noun (1728 in the passage translated in quot. 1728 at sense A. 1; < post-classical Latin Lesgi + French -ien -ian suffix); compare -ian suffix. In β. forms (ii) < French Lesguine, Lezghine, noun (1826 or earlier; < Russian lezgin (see below)); compare -ine suffix1. In γ. forms (iii) < Russian lezgin, noun (a1725 or earlier as ležgin) < lezg (see Lezgi n.) + -in , suffix forming nouns (compare Mordvin n., Ossetin n.). With use as noun compare earlier Lezgi n.

1. A member of a people of the north-eastern Caucasus, now mainly inhabiting the southern part of the Russian Republic of Dagestan and north-eastern Azerbaijan. In early use more loosely: †a member of any of various peoples inhabiting the mountains of Dagestan (obsolete).
