Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian libero.
Etymology: < Italian libero, short for battitore libero free outfielder (1962 or earlier) < battitore beater, outfielder + libero free ( < classical Latin līber : see liberal adj.).
Association Football.
In certain types of team formation: a defensive player who does not have specific responsibility for marking an opposing player; (originally) spec. one who plays across the width of the field behind the other defenders, as a last line of defence; = sweeper n. 1e. Cf. catenaccio n.
