Etymology: < Byzantine Greek αὐτοκέϕαλος, literally ‘having a head of its own’ ( < ancient Greek αὐτο- auto- comb. form¹ + κεϕαλή head) + -ous suffix. Compare post-classical Latin autocephalus (1604 or earlier as noun denoting an Orthodox bishop who is not subject to the authority of an archbishop or external patriarch, c800 in a British source as adjective), French autocéphale (1680 as adjective, 1721 as noun), both < Greek.
