Etymology: < liberty n.1 + cap n.1
1. A soft conical hat worn as a symbol of liberty; a Phrygian cap (see Phrygian adj. 3). Frequently in figurative contexts. Cf. cap of liberty at cap n.1 4g(c).Such hats were originally given to Roman slaves on emancipation (cf. pileus n. 1) and hence were adopted as a symbol of the French Revolution (see bonnet rouge n.).
