Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French autoclave.
Etymology: < French autoclave, noun (1820; short for marmite autoclave , literally ‘self-fastening cooking pot’) < auto- auto- comb. form1 + classical Latin clāvis key (see clavis n.). Compare German Autoklav (1822 or earlier; also †Autoclave; < French).
Originally: a kind of pressure cooker. In later use more widely: a strong container in which substances can be heated under pressure, used for chemical reactions and other processes, esp. steam sterilization.
