Etymology: < Latin Lēthē, a use of Greek λήθη forgetfulness, < ληθ-, ablaut-variant of λαθ-, root of λανθάνεσθαι to forget. In Greek Λήθη is not the name of the river, though it occurs as a personification; the river is Λήθης ὕδωρ ‘water of Lethe’.
