Etymology: < auto- comb. form2 + cross- (in cross-country adj.). Compare earlier motocross n.
(a) British. A form of cross-country motor racing. Now rare. (b) A form of motor racing in which cars are driven singly or in heats over a temporary course, with an emphasis on handling ability. Also: an event featuring such racing. Chiefly attributive.
