Primary stress is retained by the usual stressed syllable of the preceding element and vowels may be reduced accordingly.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin -clastes; Greek -κλάστης.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin -clastes (in e.g. -iconoclastes iconoclast n.) and its etymon Hellenistic Greek -κλάστης breaker (in e.g. ὀστοκλάστης ossifrage) < ancient Greek κλασ- , stem of κλᾶ̑ν to break (see clastic adj.) + -της, suffix forming agent nouns. Compare French -claste, German -klast.Earliest in the isolated early borrowing iconoclast n., which is the model for most formations in sense 1. In sense 2 apparently earliest in lithoclast n. 2, apparently after a German model. In sense 3 apparently earliest in osteoclast n. 1, after a German model. In sense 4 apparently earliest in pyroclast n. (after pyroclastic adj.).
