The principle of the lightning rod was first described by Benjamin Franklin; compare the following passage referring to experiments and observations made in Philadelphia in 1749:1750 B. Franklin Let. 29 July in Papers (1961) IV. 19 May not the Knowledge of this Power of Points be of Use to Mankind; in preserving Houses, Churches, Ships &c. from the Stroke of Lightning; by Directing us to fix on the highest Parts of those Edifices upright Rods of Iron, made sharp as a Needle...
