Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: light n.1, sabre n.
Etymology: < light n.1 + sabre n.Coined by U.S. film-maker George Lucas for the 1977 film Star Wars and subsequent films in the series, in which the weapon is used primarily by the Jedi Order (see Jedi n.) and their foes, the Sith.
In the fictional universe of the Star Wars films: a weapon resembling a sword, but having a destructive beam of light in place of a blade. Also: a toy resembling this.
