Etymology: < the name of Jules Antoine Lissajous (1822–80), French physicist.

Used attributively and in the possessive to designate the plane figures (mostly crossed loops and simple curves) traced by a point executing two independent simple harmonic motions at right angles to one another and with frequencies in a simple numerical ratio (described by Lissajous in Compt. Rend. (1855) XLI. 814).
