Origin: A borrowing from French; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymon: French livereison.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman livereison, livereisun, livereson, liveresoun, liveresun, livreison, lyverson allowance (1139), ration of food and drink (1212 or earlier) < liverer , livrer liver v. + -eison -ation suffix, after classical Latin līberātiōn-, līberātiō liberation n.; sense 1 is apparently not paralleled in any variety of French (including Anglo-Norman), and may show the influence of the Latin noun on English. Compare Old French livereison , livreison , livroison , Middle French livrison , Middle French, French livraison (second half of the 12th cent.; now chiefly in senses ‘delivery of goods’ and ‘instalment of a book’: see livraison n.), and also Old Occitan liurazon (12th cent.). Compare also the medieval French nouns cited at deliveration n. Compare liverance n., livering n.1 2, livery n. II.
