Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymons: German Augen, Auge.
Etymology: < German Augen, specific use of the plural of Auge eye n.1 (compare eye n.1 10d). With augen-schist compare German Augenschiefer (1876 or earlier, now rare). Compare earlier augen-gneiss n. and the German form cited at that entry.Compare the following example of the German word cited in an English context, in the translation of an influential work:1866 P. H. Lawrence tr. B. von Cotta Rocks Classified ii. ii. 233 Usually it [sc. orthoclase] occurs only in small grains, sometimes larger crystals or lentil-shaped masses so called, swellings or eyes (Schwielen, Augen), with the regular twin growth peculiar to orthoclase (porphyritic gneiss, augen-gneiss).
Geology.
Flattened oval or lens-shaped mineral grains present in some metamorphic rocks, notably augen-gneiss (see augen-gneiss n.). Chiefly attributive, indicating the presence of such grains, as augen-schist, augen structure, etc.Cf. eye n.1 10d.
