Etymology: Partly (i) < French auget (1751; late 12th cent. in Old French denoting the basket in which, according to the biblical legend, the infant Moses was hidden among reeds on the River Nile; < auge trough (13th cent. in Old French; < classical Latin alveus basin: see alveus n.) + -et -et suffix¹), and partly (ii) < French augette (1751; early 15th cent. in Middle French in sense ‘small trough’; < auge + -ette -ette suffix). N.E.D. (1885) gives the pronunciation as (oʒe, ǭdʒe·t) /oʒe/, /ɔːˈdʒɛt/.

Chiefly Military. Obsolete.
