Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French limicole; Latin limicola.
Etymology: < (i) French limicole (noun) wading bird (1823 or earlier), (in plural limicoles ) oligochaete worm of the former division Limicolae (1862 in E. Claparède Recherches anatomiques sur les oligochètes), (adjective) mud-dwelling (1834 or earlier with reference to wading birds, 1884 or earlier with reference to worms), and its etymon (ii) post-classical Latin limicola mud-dweller (4th cent.; 1811 (in plural Limicolae : J. K. W. Illiger Prodromus systematis mammalium et avium 260) as a former group name of waders in ornithology; 1865 (in plural Limicolae ) or earlier as a former division name of oligochaetes, in this sense after French limicoles , plural noun) < classical Latin līmus mud (see lime n.1) + -cola (see -cole comb. form). Compare earlier terricole adj. and (with the use as noun) terricole n. Compare also slightly earlier limicoline adj., limicolous adj.
