1862 H. C. Rawlinson in Athenæum 19 July 83/1 I am quite ready to abandon this notion if any more suitable explanation can be found of the office of Limu, from which the Assyrians commonly dated; but in the mean time I cannot accept of the unmeaning title of Eponymy, nor can I admit of the etymology which would make the Limu merely the ‘seer’ of the new moon.
1888 Z. A. Ragozin Assyria (ed. 2) v. 146 The year was then designated as the ‘Limmu’ of So-and-So. It is thought..that the magistrates themselves, in their capacity of time~keepers, had the special title of Limmu... Every king was limmu at least once, generally the second full year of his reign.
1901 R. W. Rogers Hist. Babylonia & Assyria I. xii. 323 Historical inscriptions..often mention the limmu or eponym of a certain year, just as they give the name of the king who was reigning.
1956 A. Toynbee Historian's Approach to Relig. i. v. 57 The Assyrian list of holders of the office of limmu.
1963 F. S. Leigh-Browne tr. J. Læssøe People Anc. Assyria iii. 40 The Assyrians named the year after the official who (for that one year) occupied the office of limmu.
