Rawlinson in Athenæum 19 July 83/1 I am quite ready to abandon this notion if any more suitable explanation can be found of the office of Limu, from which the Assyrians commonly dated; but in the mean time I cannot accept of the unmeaning title of Eponymy, nor can I admit of the etymology which would make the Limu merely the ‘seer’ of the new moon.

1888 Z. A. Ragozin Assyria (ed. 2) v. 146 The year was then designated as the ‘Limmu’ of So-and-So. It is thought..that the magistrates themselves, in their capacity of time~keepers, had the special title of Limmu... Every king was limmu at least once, generally the second full year of his reign.
