Primary stress is retained by the usual stressed syllable of the preceding element and vowels may be reduced accordingly.
Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek κλίνειν.
Etymology: < ancient Greek κλίνειν to slope, bend, to cause to lean (see cline n.), after -clinal comb. form.Formations are found from at least the middle of the 19th cent.; early examples are first attested later than the corresponding adjectives in -clinal comb. form (e.g. anticline n., isocline n.). Formations apparently independent of an earlier adjective are found from at least the end of the of the 19th cent. (e.g. endocline n. at endo- prefix and comb. form , homocline n.).
