单词 athel
释义

atheln.1

Forms: Old English æðel-u plural Middle English æðele, aðele plural, ? athel singular
Etymology: Old English æðel-u , -o , neuter plural of *æðel = Old Saxon ađali , noun, Old High German adal , noun, Middle High German, modern German, Dutch adel ‘good family, noble descent, nobility,’ Old Norse aðal ‘family, race, kind,’ < root *aþ Aryan āt , not in Gothic. The original signification seems to have been ‘race, ancestry’ as in Old Norse (compare the cognate ethel n., Old English éðel, ‘ancestral land, patrimony, patria’), which was specialized in West Germanic as ‘distinguished race, good family, nobility’: compare specific use of German geschlecht, and of family in ‘county families.’
Obsolete.
Ancestry, origin; spec. noble ancestry, nobility; hence, honour, dignity, might, power.
