Etymology: modern Latin, < Greek λιθόσπερμον, < λίθος stone + σπέρμα seed; adopted by Linnæus in his Systema Naturæ (1735) as the name of a genus.
A herb or sub-shrub of the genus so called, belonging to the family Boraginaceæ, native to Europe, northern Asia, or North America, and bearing white, yellow, or blue flowers.
