Etymology: < post-classical Latin lixiviation-, lixiviatio (1620 or earlier) < lixiviat- , past participial stem of lixiviare lixiviate v. + -io -ion suffix1. Compare French lixiviation (1676 in the passage translated in quot. 1678). Compare earlier lixiviate v. and lixiviate adj.
Now chiefly historical.
The action or process of separating a soluble substance from one that is insoluble by leaching with water; esp. the extraction of salts from wood ashes or other material in this way.
